Late night snacking can kill a healthy diet because if you're like this fat guy it seems to hit right around bed time. Now snacking late at night isn't always bad buy I tend to crave the stuff I've passed on all day, which usually means I want stuff that's high in fat, carbs and sugar. The pepperoni pizza that I smelled earlier in the day comes to mind. The ice cream I saw some kid eating earlier and if I've been drinking it's greasy stuff like an all you can eat breakfast place.
Obviously it doesn't matter how well you stayed with your healthy diet if you slam down 4 pancakes, 2 eggs, sausage links and maple syrup for dessert. Sure it sounds good but let's try not to become too fat. OK?
You may be getting hungry late at night because you're eating dinner too early. I usually go to sleep around midnight so if I eat dinner at 6:00 I'm going to be hungry before I go to sleep and there's no way around it. I can go 4 hours without getting hungry but much past that I better put some food in belly. the question is what kind of goodies are needed?
Another reason for being hungry late at night is dehydration. Often your belly will say "Feed Me" when all it really wants is a drink of water. Drink a big glass of water and weight 20 minutes. Or maybe have a glass of decaf tea of something hot. Then see if you're still hungry.
If it turns out that you still need to eat then eat something but make it healthy. We're men and we like to eat but that doesn't mean we need to throw away a day's worth of healthy dieting because of some late night cravings. Try some of these ideas.
- Fruit. Fruit is a good choice because it's sweet, has some filling fiber and moisture. It has 3 of the things that you might be craving late at a night. If you feel the need for some protein spread a little peanut butter on that apple or banana or grab a SMALL piece of hard or low fat cheese.
- Veggies. Maybe you just need something crunchy and if that's the case then some raw veggies with hummus or law-fat veggie dip should help you make it through. Cut the veggies up when you bring them home so you can't use the excuse of, "Too much trouble".
- Bulky Foods. Popcorn is one of my favorite late night snacks. It's salty, kind of crunchy and filled with fiber.
- Portion controlled snacks. If you have to have some cookies then go for those little portion controlled packs. Sure they cost a fortune but if you're going to eat cookies at midnight then it shouldn't be that convenient for you.
- Sorbet or Italian Ice. Usually these have tons of sugar in them but they usually have no fat and fewer calories than ice cream. Not a great choice but better then a container of rocky road ice cream.
Try out some of these and plan accordingly. Most stores are usually closed by 11:00 so either you have something healthy in your home to eat by then or you don't.
