One of the best things about healthy dieting and losing weight is that a Fat Guy like me can eat 5 or 6 times a day. that doesn't mean I can have a double cheese burger with fries 5 times a day or eat doughnuts as snacks but I can eat 3 healthy means and 3 or 3 snacks in between.
Here's a list of this Fat Guy's favorite healthy snacks. Yes, I did say "healthy" snacks so I have to leave off buffalo wings, blue cheese dip and beer but there's a time an place for those too.
If you're worried that preparing snacks is difficult, this youngster to the left is here to show you that making most of these snacks is child's play provided you get off you butt and make sure that you have some healthy ingredients laying around your house.
Eat every 3 hours as the experts tell us to do and you won't be hungry all day.
Grab And Go Snacks
- Raw vegetables such as carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, cucumber. If you feel like a rabbit try adding some no fat dip because some of those at the super market are pretty good.
- Fresh fruit like apples, pears, bananas, oranges, grapes work well and can give you a little sugar boost in the middle of the afternoon.
- Granola bars and protein bars. I'm not talking about those sticky energy bars that are filled with carbs for those skinny runner types. Read the ingredients and look for 8+ grams of protein. I've been eating lots of Cliff Bars lately but any of the "Protein" bars should be fine.
- Nuts and seeds are great if you don't mind feeling a little squirrely but read the label. Often seeds have been deep fried you might as well eat french fries instead.
- Fig bars and other high fiber variants. If you're an old Fat Guy like me then you might remember the "Big Fig Newton". If you don't remember then all you're missing is a really funny and very stupid commercial. Any way these sweet cookies at least have lots of fiber.
- Dried fruit such as raisins, apricots, dates, prunes and other assorted varieties that are popping up in grocery stores. These really aren't as bad as you might think
- Low fat string cheese. Cheese that you don't even need to put on a stick. What else needs to be said?
- Whole grain crackers but read the label since some of these have little whole grain and lots of fat. I like Wasa with some low fat cheese on them.
- Low fat yogurt. OK, so there's really no way to eat low fat yogurt without feeling a little girlie at first but you'll get used to it and it tastes good.
- Fruit cups and applesauce but not the ones with added sugar often labeled in light or heavy syrup.
Minimal Prep Snacks
- Ants on a log - Spread some peanut butter (almond and cashew butter work as well) on celery and top it with raisins.
- Quick Hot Wrap - Wrap some lean meat and low fat cheese in a whole grain tortilla. Microwave for 30 seconds. My favorites are ham with no fat pepper jack and roast beef with laughing cow cheese.
- Ricotta Toast - Spread some low fat ricotta cheese on whole grain bread or crackers. It's actually pretty tasty and you can add some fruit if you like.
- Fast Home Made Trail Mix - Store bought trail mix is OK but many brands have more fat and sugar then you may expect. Mixing some granola, dried fruit, nuts and seeds not only gives you control of the fat and sugar but you can also add more of your favorites goodies.
- Cream Cheese Crackers - Spread laughing cow low fat cheese (or other brand) on Wasa or other whole grain crackers. Top it with raisins or other fruit if you like.
- Low fat microwave popcorn. Orville Redenbacher may be a geek but his Low Fat Kettle Corn is a favorite of this Fat Guy. When you're microwaving this stuff be careful and don't turn your back on it. The transition from popping to burning is very quick and can easily fill a kitchen with smoke - or so I've heard.
- Peanut Butter Roll Ups - Spread peanut butter on whole grain tortillas and roll them up. I don't care how badly you cook, you can make these.
- Tuna or salmon in a pouch with whole grain or sesame crackers. This stuff is sold everywhere now and it's not bad.
